Dr. Waldorf, our clinic cat, says...

Spring is here!  When the warm weather arrives, so do mosquitos that carry heartworm disease.  All dogs, no matter how much they are outside, are at risk for heartworm disease.

  • Heartworm disease is fatal if not treated.
  • Heartworm disease is easily prevented with monthly chewable tablet or pill (i.e. Heartgard Plus, Interceptor, Iverhart Max, etc).
  • The treatment for Heartworm disease is multiple injections of a cyanide based medication and animals must be on cage rest for 6-8 weeks!
  • Heartworm disease is in South Dakota...at our clinic we are currently treating a 6 year old Akita for the disease.  She was very underweight, had difficulty breathing, and was very tired.  Although she is in the final stages of her treatment and is beginning to gain weight, she still has a long way to go!
  • Our heartworm test is done in clinic and also tests for lyme disease, ehrlichia, and anaplasmosis which are diseases spread by ticks.
  • We recommend a heartworm test in the spring and monthly preventative April through November.
